One of the things I’ve promised myself is to keep the self-promotion to a minimum here at Story Club, but I hope you’ll permit this brief violation of that policy.
Over the last few years of craziness, I’ve been working hard on a new collection of stories, pouring all my agitated, confused energy into that lovely task, and I’m happy to announce that that book, called Liberation Day, will be published on October 18 of this year.Â
Here’s what the cover will look like:
The cover was designed by the great Chelsea Cardinal, who also did the covers for Tenth of December, Fox 8, Lincoln in the Bardo, and A Swim in a Pond in the Rain.
I’m so happy and excited about this book. There are four new stories in it, including the (long) title story, and what I like most about it right now is that I’m not entirely sure what it means or what it’s about. I know that I put everything I had into it and that it’s intense, and definitely got out beyond my conscious control, in a good way (as we’re always talking about here at Story Club) and started telling me what it had in mind, which is really the best thing that can happen with a collection, in my experience.Â
Even now, having just finished the first round of copy edits, it’s still speaking to me and, if I could say it this way, still growing on me. Whatever it is, I feel like it’s a true product of our times.Â
I hope you like it, when it comes out.
Thank you. I hope you'll share your thoughts, one day, on how you go about putting together a collection, how, for you, it gels, how you select.
Iv'e been meaning to tell you that your defaulting to feminine articles when its not known is very important to me. I don't know anyone else who does that. But it is so powerful to me. I am 78 years old with tow older brothers and a very strong/powerful dad. Growing up I derfered to males all the time, in little but improtand ways. I hate that. Whenever I come across your choice of feminine articles, I stop and think about it. It is a big deal for me. So...I thank you. I am so grateful for this club. I just bought Women in their Beds...the introduction by Peter Orner reminded me of your writing. I read it aloud to my husband...so good! Gina is my new favorite author.
