So, I just got home from a trip to New Orleans to visit my parents. I’m home today (Tuesday) and then tomorrow, Wednesday, I’m heading to D.C. for two events:
First, on Thursday evening, I’m giving a talk as part of the Library of Congress Prize for Fiction I got last year. It will be at 7:00 pm, in the Members Room of the Thomas Jefferson Building, 10 1st Street NE. I’m going to be talking about my process and fiction in general - what it does for us personally, spiritually, culturally. After the talk, I’ll be in conversation with Robert Casper of the LoC and will be signing books.
Then, on Friday, I’m doing two events at Oak Hill Cemetery, the setting of Lincoln in the Bardo.
From 10:00 to 11:30 a.m., we’ll be doing a walking tour of Oak Hill, with special emphasis on places that appear in the book. This walk has a ten-person limit and it’s mostly full - but for more information, contact Laura Thoms at archives@oakhillcemeterydc.org.
At 5:30 p.m., I’ll be giving a talk on the research and writing of Lincoln in the Bardo, in the Renwick Chapel, which is where Willie’s service was held, back in 1862. The event is a celebration of the 175th Anniversary of Oak Hill Cemetery and a fundraiser for the Oak Hill Cemetery Preservation Foundation. The link to register is:

There are still a few tickets left. There are also a limited number of free tickets reserved for students to attend the evening talk. Students can register for the free ticket lottery by emailing their contact info with the subject heading “Saunders Student Lottery Tickets” to Laura at archives@oakhillcemeterydc.org.
If you’re a student and are interested in attending the talk, please email Laura by Wednesday at midnight. She’ll reach out to the winners on Thursday morning.
It’s a lovely, haunted place (at least it is to me), haunted by all those hours I spent imagining a slightly altered version of it. Hope to see some of you there.
Just a quick update to say that the talk and the tour are both (thanks to you, Story Club) SOLD OUT. Laura Thom as Oak Hill is keeping a waitlist for the talk.
Thank you all, so much.
This all sounds terrific, Have a great time, George! Wish we could all be there. Do you know if any of this will be filmed for later viewing?
