Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.
As a gift to ourselves, let’s…take today off. :)
I just got back home from an intense and wonderful teaching experience with my third-year Syracuse students and, before that, the Cincinnati opera trip, so I’m unpacking and unwinding and trying to think about getting back to work, while also working with Paula to get the house in shape for company and trying to re-ingratiate myself with the pets.
I’ll have a big Office Hours up behind the paywall on Sunday, on the topic of how to tame the 1,200-page “elephant” that is the Questioner’s novel-in-progress…
I want to say how grateful I am that you all are here, and, especially, for the kindness and tolerance and good humor always evident in the Comments. It’s not so easy, these days, to talk about things in a loving-hearted, patient way (a way that assumes the full humanity of the other parties in the discussion), but you all consistently model this mindset so wonderfully here and I am finding that this has had a really happy effect on my view of the world….because it’s real. It really happens here, week after week.
We can say that the world is harsh and irrational and cruel - and sometimes it is - but we also have to say that it can sometimes be otherwise. And we here are, collectively, showing that.
So…thank you. Hope it’s a great day.
Thanks George. Story Club is at the top of my list of things to be thankful for. As you say, "it's a community that assumes the full humanity of the other parties in the discussion." That's a rare thing lately. Thanks for all you do to lead it and keep it together.
Happy Thanksgiving, George! Sending love to all my fellow Story Clubbers! Huge gratitude to all of you for the discussions, the camaraderie, the kindnesses, the openness, the fearlessness, the optimism! And my thanks to George, the most. xoxo
