I was just looking through some old teaching files and was reminded that, a few years back, I designed and taught a class called “One City, Ten Years,” for my graduate students. It was what we call a “Forms” class - basically, literature for writers. (The class on the Russian short story that was the basis for “A Swim in a Pond in the Rain” was also a Forms class.)
I taught “One City, Ten Years” once, and then my teaching schedule changed in such a way that I probably won’t have the chance to teach it again. But I loved it, that one time, and so I wanted to share it with all of you, for the teachers among you, but also for anyone who might want to give it a try.
