I have abandoned far more than I've finished. I have two novels I am proud of having written but I can't bring myself to revisit them long enough for revision. The joy is not there. Not only that, but I fear they have wrung every last bit of my excitement for them and they will remain forever unfinished, along with almost every story I've started in the 30+ years I've been writing.

But I can specifically relate to the novel the Story Clubber mentioned -- I had a brain tumor and attendant drama associated with it about 8 years ago. I always thought I would write about my experience, but unlike you I found it impossible to approach the subject again. I am happy to talk about every part of the experience but writing was demanding too much from me. Not only was it not joyful, but it was unpleasant to revisit.

In between all those false starts I found a short story in my notebook in front of me about a farmer whose brain is taken over by an invasive parasite. That was easy and it came to me naturally and with the joy and excitement that directly writing about it lacked. I don't know if I took an oblique approach or if the premise of the story emerged from my subconscious. I won't dwell on it too much, and I have just finished another round of revisions on it. I think it might even be finished, or nearly so.

The tumor that almost took me out ended up being a little spark that reignited the fire that I thought had gone out forever.

Don’t know if you heard that you were in the comics last Sunday: Frazz by Jef Mallett. Characters discussed whether “George Saunders is a national treasure” is an opinion. They decided it was a fact.
