Apparently there was a spam-type thing going around earlier today, in the form of a Reply to Comments, purporting to be from me, asking you to text me at a certain number.
But thankfully it's not a hack as such, it's just a serial impersonator causing mischief. I chatted to Substack and they're keeping tabs on these things and act quickly (and my impersonator was only up for minutes before being banned.)
Nevertheless, a royal pain in the rear! Sorry you were targeted, George.
I was thinking, surely we’ll all be characters in a future story. I want to be thinner and a better tennis player, fewer white eyebrow hairs, if you please, George.
Hi apologies if I'm putting this in the wrong place: I don't know how to originate a new comment thread, or if that's even possible. I've always found this group very supportive so I'm hoping for some advice on the content already posted here:
I have a block of writing time that was unexpected (about a week) (thanks Covid). Rather than spend all of it on an ongoing project I find myself rejuvenated and inspired to do something new and short, and am really excited to dive in with little preconceptions of what I"ll write, as GS often does.
Family illnesses and heavy work schedule has kept me from reading a lot of our group over the past several months, with the exception of CommComm posts and some of the office hours. But what I'm wondering is if anyone remembers a post or series of posts/comment about prompt or ways of kick starting a new, short project. If anyone's able to point me towards that here, or recommend any other sources for such, I'd be very appreciative.
Are ther maybe any specific Office hours threads on this topic, or any posts on this topic in other threads that went sideways?
Thanks for getting right on this, George. A little worrisome, especially since it seems Story Club wasn't the only target. This stuff happens, of course, but I expected a little more of Substack.
Thanks Mr. Saunders for your clarification on bogus attempts by stalkers who attempt to lure people into giving their information out. It has happened to me on YouTube on many of my subscriptions by saying they have a gift for me or do I want to meet for coffee or give ask me to contact them on What’s App or Tendr. That is serious stuff. I delete any such texts immediately and I sure hope it is being monitored.

“George, for real” is exactly what an almost competent AI would write to relax our vigilance.
Yes I are.
I received it and reported it. The person signed the name as George Saunder’s. 😀
Alas, not the first time! I was hit by a similar case last week (similar text, different phone number), along with a number of other writers including https://popularrationalism.substack.com/p/quick-note-popular-rationalism-hacked/

^..^ Sounds like the start of a crime story.
It’s been happening on a number of Substacks.
A bad George Saunders impersonator. I'd read that story.

Work on your forehand up the line^^
That’s what my coach says!
Open the pod bay doors, HAL.
i can't do that, Norm.
I can't do that either, Norm. Nobody seems to be able to do it. Dang it. Dang it.
Clang it, clang it.
Does this mean we are going on a incredibly visual trip soon?
I have not received it, but I would have been suspicious.
Being jaded has its advantages :-) lol

What was Spam wearing?^^
Spamdex.
Ha!
😂

Great question.

The same thing happened on Ted Gioia's substack a few weeks ago. Must be someone targeting substacks in particular.
Happened on another Substack too!
I think the spammer may have also "liked" some of our comments.
I should clarify, "liked" from George.
Yes, I ceased doing Like last year.
I think this is a great first line.
